Professor Pepperell, who was Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne (Royal Women's Hospital) for 21 years, retired from this position at the end of 1998. Since then he has held a position of Professorial Fellow in the same department, with responsibility for the Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine component of the new educational program in Semester 4 (Year 2) of the revised Medical Course at Melbourne University, and for assessing and handling the Medico-legal problems seen in a large Obstetrical and Gynaecological Institution. His interest in clinical medicine, particularly in the area of reproductive endocrinology and infertility has also continued.
In the year 2000 he was co-opted as a Member of the Faculty of Duke University in the USA to evaluate the most recent data on the use of HRT in Menopausal care, with this leading to the production of educational programs which are now widely used in the USA.
Overall he has written widely in the discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has more than 100 publications in refereed journals, has been an invited speaker at numerous international meetings and continues to act as an invited referee in the discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for 3 International Journals. In addition he is the current Chairman of the Board of Examiners for the Australian Medical Council, and in that role is responsible for the assessment Foreign Medical Graduates wishing to become registered to practice medicine in this country.
